Getting a cold in Xi’an
You know how, when you’re packing your stuff, you always get that sinking feeling like you’re forgetting something? Well, last Sunday, as I was packing for my flight back to Xi’an, I did actually forget something. No, I did not leave anything behind in Shanghai (well at least not unintentionally), I did however forget to take my pocket knife out of my hand luggage and put it into my suitcase :$
Fortunately I had arrived at the airport quite early so after a slightly embarrassing scene at the metal detector I still had time to go back to the check in counter to have my knife checked in. Before I could do that however I had to have it packed in a big styrofoam box which got stuck three times on the way up to the main conveyor belt because it was too light. Imagine my surprise when it arrived at Xi’an without any problems! I asked some waitresses for a pair of scissors and their confused looks after taking my tiny pocket knife out of the big box and then returning the empty box back to them was worth the 25 RMB for packaging by itself already
In Xi’an I met up with Oscar who didn’t leave for Shanghai until Tuesday. It was nice to see him again as I thought I had seen the last of him at the beginning of the internship already. Now, a number of schedule changes later however, it seems all four of us Dutch interns will be in Shanghai when I go back to Shanghai at the 26th.
Unfortunately the traveling or whatever didn’t do the cough I’ve been walking around with for a month now any good so I decided to get it checked out by a doctor. So, on Tuesday, Emma was nice enough to escort me to the nearby Gaoxin hospital where I got checked out from blood test (yes, they used throw away needles) to x-ray. After many hours it turned out I was fine, but I did have some signs of an infection in my blood so I got some antibiotics. As luck would have it however, that same evening I developed a pretty high fever and some pain in my chest so I (being the pessimist that I am) thought of a pneumonia and prepared myself for a week of illness. On Wednesday I took a day off and spent most of the time in bed, my fever then dropped quickly however and besides feeling tired I already felt fine again in the late afternoon. Looking back at it, I guess it was probably just a cold on top of whatever else it is I’m suffering from. Anyhow I went back to work on Thursday feeling quite rested, but still coughing a bit. Hopefully the antibiotics will help me get rid of the coughing soon as well.

Don’t you mean the middle of the middle of the world?
I’m all better again thanks to the antibiotics! So I’ve been well, but pretty busy trying to finish my internship properly etc. etc. Outside of work life here has been quite relaxed, just watching some DVD’s in the evenings.
My mother has come over on Tuesday, so I will be busy with that as well, but of course I’m very happy to see her again
Anyhow, I’ll try and post here again soon so everybody’s up to speed again!
