Yuyuan garden and Qibao

4 January, 2007 (19:55) | Internship | By: Peter Paul

In the weekend of 16 and 17 December I visited Yuyuan garden and bazaar and Qibao reconstructed historical part of town. Both are sights in Shanghai, easily reachable by taxi.

The Yuyuan garden was quite beautiful despite the time of year thanks to it’s heavy use of decorative stones and evergreen. It almost felt like a garden in Suzhou, but this was in the middle of Shanghai! I’m definitely going to show this to my mother when she visits Shanghai at the end of the month.

Outside the Yuyuan garden is the famous teahouse and the bazaar; a large area filled with big malls and small shops selling anything a tourist might want and more. The temple of the town gods is here as well, but I didn’t feel like paying an entry fee to see that up close.

On Sunday the 18th I went to Qibao, which is famous for it’s beautiful old recovered buildings and the pretty river and bridges in the middle. If that is what you’re looking for, like me, you’ll be disappointed however as it’s quite small and limited and way too busy to really enjoy. If you like to eat all kinds of weird Chinese snacks however, like most Chinese visitors, you can have a great time here as the little alleyways are stuffed with them.
