Party weekend
Last weekend I went out dancing two nights in a row after a long time of absence from any club. First up was my first experience of Drum ‘n Bass in China with the famous DJ Makoto and MC Deeizm in the awesome BonBon club. Second, on new year’s eve, we went to the hippest place to be in Shanghai right now: the Attica club; right at the Bund and really expensive, but hey.. it was new year’s eve
DJ Makoto played some pretty good DnB, not too hard, not too soft. I remember I had some of his tracks which were pretty soft and melodic, but this was more atuned to the big club full of people wanting to dance the night away. MC Deeizm could actually sing pretty, which was a refreshing change from most of those shouting male MC’s who basically just add noise to the music. I ended up dancing most of the night from 0:30 to 4:30 at which point we still dropped by Windows Too briefly before heading back home to get some sleep.

The Attica was really expensive, but it was also really big and really nice with a gorgeous view of Pudong and everything. DJ Dmitri from France was playing and the singer performing after the countdown to midnight was impressive (probably famous, but I didn’t recognize him). Plenty of space and couches to lounge upstairs from the main dance floor where we met some cool San Fransiscans and some friendly Germans. This combination ended up providing us with drinks for most of the evening so in the end I didn’t even spend that much
We didn’t see much fireworks over the Huangpi river that night so it’s safe to say that western new year is not a big thing in China. In fact, many people simply go out shopping (there were supposed to be big discounts on Nanjing Lu just before midnight) or just walk around town from what I heard. I’m curious to see what Chinese new year will be like though!
