Slow, slower, timeout
Due to an earthquake off the coast of Taiwan, one of China’s main internet connections has been broken. This means that connections inside China still work at normal speeds, but connections to America and Europe are very slow if they work at all.
Fortunately, some of the websites that still function (albeit slow) are my favorites, like gmail and digg. Unfortunately, even if I would theoretically (see post below) be able to get image uploading working again, the slow and unstable connection would spoil things again. Posting in my blog for that matter is also practically impossible, I’m actually writing this in a lynx (text mode) browser in a remote shell on one of my friends servers (thanks chiel).
And then there’s MSN; I’ve only been able to sign in successfully once (briefly) so far. Skype seems to be more forgiving, but I doubt voice conversations will work well. So it’s back to good old email for now my friends.
Finally, the question on everybody’s mind of course is, when will this all be fixed again? From what I heard it could take two to three weeks for the connection to be repaired. I can only hope they will arrange some sort of temporary solution before then…
Oh well.. happy new year everybody! ![]()
