Going out in Xi’an

31 October, 2006 (18:27) | Internship | By: Peter Paul

I enjoyed a variety of food again this last week, ranging all the way from freaky to very nice.

On the freaky side: small intestines of a pig, which I ordered blindly (translation said halogen rice). I didn’t like the taste of that very much, and could only confirm my guesses of what it was a few days later. Slightly freaky also was some spicy chicken which turned out to contain half a head and one of it’s feet. Another surprise was a little dinner at a very expensive soup restaurant (with soups up to 600RMB!) where we managed to get dinner at a decent price, but the tea turned out to cost 50RMB.

China blog layout

30 October, 2006 (11:04) | Blog, Internship | By: Peter Paul

Although I appreciated the simplicity of my previous theme, it did get a bit boring after a while. So I started playing around with some of my pictures and made a header image. Then I looked around for a suitable theme and customized it to include my header and to get the Google Map etc. working.

This Sunday me and Chris Zhu went sight seeing together a little bit (first time visit to Xi’an for her as well, she’s from Shanghai) and visited the Dayan Pagoda. We got a personal tour guide for 3 euro’s which showed us around the temple grounds for more than an hour, explaining the history of the pagoda and the man who brought buddhism to China, Xuanzang.

First week in Xi’an

This time I did manage to catch my train (got to the station with an hour to spare) and had a pleasant train ride to Xi’an. The trip takes 16 hours, with the lights off from 22:00 to 6:00. Unlike what I had heard from Jonas and Oscar, the beds weren’t too short for me. Stretching out all of my 1.88 meters my feet just touched the ladder so I was pretty comfortable. And a chance meeting with a retired electronics professor who had studied in England helped to pass time quickly.

Last week in Shanghai

16 October, 2006 (05:42) | Internship | By: Peter Paul

Well, for a while at least :P

Last tuesday I went to Little Lamb for dinner again with Vincent, Alex and Ivan (Alex’s favorite restaurant and on top of my list as well) for some more freaky hot pot. This time we had pig brain again since Vincent hadn’t tried that yet and we added sheep balls and chicken stomach to our list (Vincent’s now keeping a list of what we ate, think that was my idea originally, but I never got around to it ;))
